In 2004, I sent my confident, bubbly, outgoing son to primary school with the expectation that he would excel with his studies and fit in well. But it became evident within the first year that he was struggling and being left behind.

I talked to his teacher and was told he was just being lazy. He should try harder.

I was afraid that he may one of the many children that “slip through the cracks”.

I had a meeting with the principal, the literacy coordinator and his teacher and still had no satisfaction.

So, I had him tested for Dyslexia and he was found to “suffer” from it. I was sent back to his school with guidelines to help his learning.

The school still did not do anything, so I went into his class and helped teach my son. But I was told, sorry, if you are in the classroom, there are other students that need your help more than your son!

Due to this experience, I created my own way of teaching him. I did 6 years of research to see what works and what doesn’t.

People could see the success with my son and pleaded with me to tutor their children too. Realizing I was making such a difference, first to my own child and then others, I started pondering…

I read medical research (great for falling asleep with late at night) on eyes, ears, speech, social skills, coordination, memory functioning and sequencing.

I read books on child psychology, building self-esteem, history of the English language, history of the current school system and developments in education.

I also read autobiographies and biographies on famous and successful Dyslexics.

I studied the two prevailing theories on how to teach English in Australia – whole language emersion and phonetics – neither were the answer on their own.

I looked into different cultures in relation to how they taught their children (from ancient times to modern times).

I studied a lot of research papers on how to best teach Dyslexics and many hypothesis concerning learning disabilities. One even said if you taught the children in Latin that would help. So I studied Latin. That was a dead end!

I investigated “movement based therapy” and I checked out numerous styles of teaching Dyslexics from around the world.
